Ashura - Fasting to honor Moses

Fasting on the day of Ashura is highly recommended based on the Hadith below.

Along with this we also remember this day as one of the most tragic events in Islamic history when Prophet Muhammad's beloved grandson Imam Hussein along with his family were martyred while standing up against injustice.

SHAIH BUKHARI: Volume 6, Book 60, Number 261:
Narrated Ibn Abbas:
When Allah's Apostle arrived at Medina, he found the Jews observing the fast on the day of 'Ashura' (10th of Muharram). The Prophet asked them (about it) and they replied, "This is the day when Moses became victorious over Pharaoh." The Prophet said (to the Muslims), "We are nearer to Moses than they, so fast on this day."

It is also recommended to be generous on this day towards family members and parents because prophet Muhammad stated that whoever is generous on his family on the day of Ashura, then Allah is generous towards him for the whole year.
There are several other Hadith that refer to the importance of the day of Ashura.

...of homosexuality?...

a tutor of mine seems to love talking about homosexuality.

n ppl are talking about 'L word', a lesbian show thats into its 4th season now. i mean ive heard of i since last year... but now it seems to be all the rage! haha..

but the closest i ever get to a homosexual experience.. haha..
was in sec 3.
went back to primary school during teacher's day.
met an old buddy.
gave her one tight hug,
n then she spilled the beans....

'hey, you should know that im a lesbian' and she gave me this look that she wasnt kidding.

my reaction: 'ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh......... okay'. n i just smiled. n pretended that i was cool with it.
but deep inside, my heart was pounding. like oh darn it.

n when my primary school friends and i wanted to go home after the gathering, she was like, 'hey we could go home tgt'.

er... its okay, no thanks.

honestly, i felt awkward. i mean i dont mind being friends. but i just dont know how to react ard her. she could have been joking about her sexual orientation. but i was thinking, what if she wasnt lying, what if a close friend of mine was one? how would i react? would i react like how i did back i was 15? or would i after 6 years on, treat her differently? more maturely? i think i was asked about this once.

but honestly, if that were to happen, i do pray that Allah would bring her to the right path. at the end of the day, i just hope im not homophobic.

...01 Muharram 1428H...

i told myself that i should start the Hijrah year with a 'bang'. Rehlatul Iman aka Journey of Faith aka Night cycling was on the agenda. it had been something that i was looking forward to.

but, in the end, i didn't go for it.

and i.

am.

regretting.

it.

but there's no use crying over spilled milk now is it?
:(

but even though i didnt get to kickstart the new year with a 'bang', i did manage to learn a lesson.

this might seem so random and unrelated to the abovementioned.
but Religious harmony is very important. and no im not saying this because of what we learn in National Education. But Islam has reminded us to maintain a good akhlak for all, Muslims and non-Muslims, to follow.

and Respect is part of it. there's too much strife in this world... n too much misunderstanding of Islam and the Qur'an. thus, having a gd akhlak would at least help us to be humble and try to understand the other faiths better. perhaps, by doing so, then we Muslims can set an example for the non-Muslims and they would also learn n understand more about Islam.

wallahu'alam bi sawab.

...1 4 2 8 H...

here's a small reminder for the new hijrah year.

Ke sejadah dahimu di cecahkan
Bersihkan lah dirimu sebelum kamu dimandikan
Berwudhu'lah kamu sebelum kamu diwudhu'kan
Dan solatlah kamu sebelum kamu disolatkan

Tutuplah 'auratmu sebelum 'auratmu ditutupi
Dengan kain kafan yang serba putih
Pada waktu itu tidak guna lagi bersedih
Walaupun orang yang hadir itu merintih

Selepas itu kamu akan diletak di atas lantai
Lalu dilaksanakanlah solat Jenazah
Dengan empat kali takbir dan satu salam
Berserta Fatihah, Selawat dan doa
Sebagai memenuhi tuntutan Fardhu Kifayah

Tapi apakah empat kali takbir itu dapat menebus
Segala dosa meninggalkan solat sepanjang hidup?
Apakah solat Jenazah yang tanpa rukuk dan sujud
Dapat membayar hutang rukuk dan sujudmu yang telah luput?

Sungguh tertipulah dirimu jika beranggapan demikian
Justeru ku menyeru sekelian Muslimin dan Muslimat

Usunglah dirimu ke tikar solat
Sebelum kamu diusung ke liang lahad
Menjadi makanan cacing dan ulat

Iringilah dirimu ke masjid Sebelum kamu diiringi ke Pusara
Tangisilah dosa-dosamu setiap detik
Kerana tangisan tidak berguna bila sudah parah
Sucikanlah dirimu sebelum kamu disucikan

Sedarlah kamu sebelum kamu disedarkan
Dengan panggilan 'Izrail yang menakutkan
Berimanlah kamu sebelum kamu ditalkinkan
Kerana ianya berguna untuk yang tinggal
Bukan yang sudah meninggal

Beristighfarlah kamu sebelum kamu diistighfarkan
Namun ketika itu istighfar tidak menyelamatkan
Ingatlah di mana saja kamu berada
Kamu tetap memijak bumi Tuhan
Serta menikmati rezeki Tuhan

Justeru bila Dia menyeru, sambutlah seruan-Nya
Sebelum Dia memanggilmu buat kali yang terakhirnya

Ingatlah kamu dahulu hanya setitis air yang tidak bererti
Lalu menjadi segumpal darah
Lalu menjadi seketul daging
Lalu daging itu membaluti tulang
Lalu jadilah kamu insan yang mempunyai erti

Ingatlah asal usulmu yang tidak bernilai itu
Yang kalau jatuh ke tanah
Ayam tak ingin patok itik pun tak sudi

Namun Allah mengangkatmu ke suatu mercu Yang lebih agung dari malaikat
Lahirmu bukan untuk dunia semata
Tapi gunakanlah ia buat melayar bahtera akhirat

Sambutlah seruan 'Hayya 'alas Solaah'
Dengan penuh rela dan bersedia
Sambutlah seruan 'Hayya 'alal Falaah'
Jalan kemenangan akhirat dan dunia

Ingatlah yang kekal ialah amalan
Menjadi bekal sepanjang jalan
Menjadi teman di perjalanan
Guna kembali ke pangkuan Tuhan

...to brave it...

i foresee a hectic semester ahead, one that's prob going to be one of my toughest.

im kinda tired of thinking how scary this sem would be. it's tiring to worry, and it's tiring to care about the disdainful reactions i got from people when they found out that im doing 6 modules or 4 core mods (im expecting to hear gasps at this instance? haha.)

but yeah, enough about me. blogging has the danger of making a person a tad narcissistic.

so, to my dear friends who are facing the same battle or those who are facing bigger ones, i do hope u can seek solace, comfort and strength in these Words of Allah...

"And Certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits
but
give glad tidings to the patient (As-Sobiruun)"
{al-Baqarah , 2:155}

"Who then afflicted with calamity, say: Truly to Allah we belong and truly, to Him we shall return"
{al-Baqarah, 2:156}.

...i was 'laughed' at when i went to korea...

i did! i did visit korea.. when i was 13.. and i clearly remembered 2 korean girls giggling at me because they thought that wearing 'western clothes' with a hijab/tudung is funny. me? i merely smiled at them... haha. but what could i do? they don't speak english and they didn't understand it either......so how do i explain to them that im a Muslim and wearing the hijab is an act that i execute to strive for Allah's Pleasure?

but yeah, that was hmm let me see.. EIGHT years ago? nevertheless, the issue about the hijab keeps re-appearing... like how.. some people would think that those who wear the tudung look like tropical climate eskimoes.... or how they deem 'hijab-wearers (hw)' as 'traditional' and not 'modern'. what defines traditional and modern anyway? is it by the way a person dresses.. or how a person acts.. or a person's world-view.. heck even 'modern' is a volatile word to begin with.

sometimes, even, people wonder where in the world do 'hijab-wearers (hw)' get their clothes from? i mean, stores like Fox and Giordano n the likes of it dont usually sell long-sleeved tees... so they might think that (hw) gets clothes from a specialised shopping area or smtg... but u know what, u cant really blame them too.. cause ppl grow up with a conception of how western clothes should look like or worn as/ with. just look at today's advertisements... secondly, ppl have a set mind as to how certain groups of ppl should dress.. smtg like we imagine indigenous ppl with grass skirts n spears. but in fact, some already dresses ala 'modern' with shirts and ties or skirts etc...

honestly, people are in awe about a piece of cloth that covers the head....

that aside, alhamdulillah, i chanced upon an article this evening regarding the hijab. it's more of a reply letter to a woman who doesnt feel the need to put on the hijab.. because she felt that she was religious enough... the main issues in her letter were:

"...let’s talk about the hijab. You are an educated woman, ma sha’ Allah, and you have come to the following conclusions:

1) That your hair is not fitnah. (the woman cut her hair really short so she feels it wont bring any fitnah)

2) That you do not think a “little piece of cloth to cover a few inches of hair will add anything to [your] behavior or [your] strong religious beliefs and activity.”

3) That “in Egypt lots of veiled women do not even pray and unfortunately they set a very bad image of Islam.”

4) That when you practice putting on the hijab in front of the mirror, you feel like you are “looking at someone else” and you “feel that [you] lost [your] identity.”

so came the reply:

Those four conclusions could be discussed and debated at length. Since you are an educated woman, we want to pose some questions for you to consider at your own leisure:

why is it that only your hair is not fitnah? Moreover, your hair is not fitnah for whom? How do you know what impact or affect your hair has on men?

Why do you believe that the hijab is meant to add anything to your behavior? Do you believe the hijab is supposed to make a person more religious? How? Shouldn’t it be the other way around; that instead of adding something to a woman’s behavior, wearing the hijab actually complements a woman’s struggle to be religious? Isn’t a religious person someone who would try to follow all the commandments of Allah and therefore would already be putting on the hijab anyway?

Just because some women who wear the hijab do not pray and set a bad image for Islam, should we do away with the hijab altogether or should we attempt to help those few women to improve themselves? When does it ever make sense to do away with the hijab, which promotes modesty and dignity, just because a minority behave badly while wearing it?

The main question we want to ask you is whether you actually believe that the hijab is obligatory for Muslim women who have reached the age of maturity? If you truly love Allah and His Messenger and consider yourself religious, then you will also obey Allah and His Messenger and strive endlessly to seek His pleasure through wholehearted and complete submission. You are so close to achieving that submission since you already do so much of what Allah has commanded us to do.

Isn’t it possible then that your own personal desire to maintain an image of who you think you are is overpowering your conscience, which is guiding you to consider wearing the hijab?

Of course it will look like you are looking at someone else when you wear the hijab, because you are fundamentally altering the shape of your head and face to some degree by covering up your hair! Nevertheless, you should not fear this new and different look because it is the look of one who, despite being fully educated and given the ability to choose, has chosen to submit to Allah Most High. Your identity is not lost, it has been enhanced, blessed, transformed into a being who, after years of struggle, has achieved peace and tranquility in her heart through complete and unflinching submission to Allah Most High.

may Allah open our hearts and minds to the Straight Path... :)

btw, i also want to bilang sesiapa2.. about 'alcohol-free' stuff... harap maklum!

“Non-alcoholic beer is haram because although it is claimed that it is alcohol free, it does have some alcohol in it. It was checked with beer manufacturers and confirmed that non-alcoholic beers do have a minimum amount of alcohol in them because during the manufacturing process, a small amount of alcohol is unavoidable. Also, the matter was checked from the legal perspective and found that U.S. law (and probably European law, too) allows beer manufacturers to claim that it is alcohol free if it contains less than one percent alcohol. It is wished that all Muslims will be aware of this fact and if they are not, then this fact should be made known through the proper educational and media channels.” (Source: www.islamicity.com)

...from reading other blogs...

i read one of u gals' blog.. the one about the 4 women. and when i read about Queen Rania of Jordan, though brief and concise, i couldnt help but feel happy that u actually wrote about her. and i too liked what she had said about the tudung.. that what is important is what is inside the head and not just what's on it. she's right in saying that too much negative aspects have been associated to the tudung... that some people tend to overlook the beauty or the symol that it carries with it... it is an act of faith, not just blind faith, not just oppression. of course, this post does not do justice to the significance of donning the tudung.. because indeed, much can be discussed about it, but....that's for another time aye?

but, like what had been written in my friend's blog, the actions of those 4 women (a queen, a president, a talk show host, a singer) who had contributed much to the society, had become a trigger factor in the re-assessment of one's life.....

the simple question begins with.....what have i achieved in these 2 decades of my life?

what have i or even you done (cliched as it will sound, but seriously) to make this world a better place to live in?
have i been a good Muslim, one who lives life like how the Qur'an and as-Sunnah have directed us to?
have i done any serious muhasabah (reflection)?
have i been too comsumed with worldly possessions?
have i changed into someone whom i am not?
have i been a dissapointment to myself?

these are the nagging questions that we sometimes try to or not to answer. these are the questions that we sometimes flex so that it will befit how we want the answer to be. these may just be some of the questions that we do not even think of....

then there are those who realise this and make good with their lives, and not waste any opportunities. the Prophet's Companions lived life with such God-Consciousness... those 4 women, a queen, a president, a talk show host and a singer... lived their lives to improve on others.....so with that in mind... when will it ever be our turn to do something about ourselves and the world we live in?
